Key terms, explained simply
- Building automation (BMS)
- Central control of lighting, climate, access and energy across a whole building, such as an office, hotel, hospital or residential tower, usually with schedules, occupancy sensors and a single dashboard for the facility team.
- Occupancy sensor
- A sensor that detects whether a room is in use and switches lights or air conditioning on or off automatically, which reduces wasted electricity.
- Zigbee
- A low-power wireless standard used by many smart home devices. Devices form a mesh network with each other, so the signal reaches every room without relying only on Wi-Fi.
- Gateway (hub)
- A small device that connects Zigbee or other wireless devices to your Wi-Fi and the app. It is the brain that runs scenes and schedules.
